Critical to ensure structural functions and durability

Structural bearings are important elements of structures, especially in large infrastructures such as bridges, heavy buildings, high rise buildings, ensuring load transfer, movement, rotation, vertical or horizontal restraints as required by the design at critical locations in a structure.

The most widely used structural bearings are reinforced elastomeric bearings and pot bearings. Spherical bearings are the best solution for large rotations. Elastomeric, pot and spherical bearings can be fixed, guided or free depending on design requirements.

VSL has the in-house capability to design and manufacture fully integrated bearings, "tailor made" to meet design requirements for loading, movements, rotations, restraints, surrounding and concrete resistance

VSL offers different types, including:

  • Elastomeric bearings for low and moderate loads
  • Pot bearings, for higher loads. They might accommodate small rotations
  • Spherical bearings, for high loads and high rotation requirements
  • Special bearings, including shear keys, up-lift systems integrated in bearings, temporary ILM bridges, and seismic bearings.

The most common application for VSL bearings is bridges, with many references world-wide.

Bridge bearings from VSL-CTT are designed and manufactured in accordance with the main codes and specifications. VSL’s design complies with Euronorm EN 1337, AASHTO, AASHTO-LRFD, or the old codes British Standard 5400, DIN 4141, etc. Any other specifications may also be accommodated.

CE Mark

All VSL bearings from are CE marked when they are designed and manufactured in accordance with Euronorm EN 1337.

How it works

Elastomeric bearings

The main mechanical property of the elastomeric bearing is its shear deformation capacity.

Types depend on horizontal loads and movements:

    • Type U: Neoprene pads for low loads
    • Type B: The bearing is subject to horizontal load but does not need to be anchored as the friction with its support is sufficient In that case, the elastomeric bearing is reinforced with internal steel plates to increase its working pressure.
    • Type BS: The bearing is subject to horizontal load higher than the friction that can be mobilized with the structure .The bearing is anchored to avoid sliding from its position.
    • Type FL: When subject to very high horizontal movements, the bearing is equipped with an upper sliding plate with low friction contact material (PTFE against stainless steel). The bearing might be anchored depending on the ratio between the horizontal and vertical loadings.

Pot bearings:

The main components of these bearings are

  • The confined elastomeric pad fitted inside the steel pot (it behaves like a fluid). The confinement of the elastomeric pad allows higher working pressure, thus a reduction of the outer bearing dimensions
  • the pot and the piston
  • the optional sliding plates with stainless steel that might be fitted on one side of the bearing to allow for horizontal movements
  • the sockets, that secure the bearing an the sliding plate to the supporting structure

Rotations are allowed from the range of 0 to 0,03 rad.

Four of Pot bearings are available, depending on horizontal movement capacity or restrain.

  • Type PL allows for movements in all directions
  • Type PU allows for movements only in longitudinal direction.
  • Type PT allows for movements only in transversal direction.
  • Type PF restrains movements in all directions

Instrumented Pot bearings:

An instrumented bearing measures the actual vertical loads that are acting upon it. The purpose of the instrumentation is to detect any changes and deviations in the load distributions on the structure. Instrumentation enables the changes to be detected immediately, so that the effects on the structural members can be determined.

There are different possibilities to capture and treat the data. Depending on the needs of the client, a specific solution will be provided.

Instrumentation has been developed for both spherical and pot bearings. It works on the principle that the structure’s vertical loads are transformed into pressure on an elastomeric pad. This pad is confined in the bearing and when the load is applied it can be considered as a hydrostatic element; as a consequence the pressure is constant in the entire element. The pressure on the elastomeric pad is measured by a sensor with a membrane connected to strain gauges. The sensor is incorporated into the bearing, with the membrane in contact with the elastomer. Once the load is transmitted from the structure to the bearing, the pressure deforms the membrane and it changes the electrical resistance of the sensor. These changes allow the system to use the variances in electric potential to calculate changes of loads. A choice of methods is available to capture the data. Information can be captured directly from the bearing by using a wired connection. Alternatively, central data storage can be set up on the structure to capture information by a wired connection or by wireless methods.

Spherical bearings

The main property of these bearings is the capability for large rotations (significantly larger than the one of pot bearings). This is achieved with low friction spherical head.

As for Pot bearings, spherical bearings are available in four types depending on horizontal movement capacity or restraints:

  • Type ST allows for movements only in transversal direction.
  • Type SF restrains movements in all directions.

Incrementally launching bridges:

Pot bearings for incrementally launched bridges have a dual function. First, they provide low friction sliding surfaces over piers as the deck is pushed during construction. Thereafter, they become permanent bearings. A pot bearing serving these functions is shown in the picture above. During construction, a fixing device avoids relative movement between the sliding plate and the pot cylinder.

The sliding plate is equipped with an upper stainless steel panel. This is followed by the insertion of neoprene-teflon pads during the launching operation to be carried out.The pads, upper stainless steel panel and fixing device are removed after launching. Finally, the sliding plate is connected to a previously embedded steel plate in the deck.

Up-lift systems:

System integrated in the bearing to avoid the rise of the upper plate due to structural conditions.

Seismic solutions:

Special bearings with integrated seismic system.

Vertical reaction measurement:

Special bearings equipped with transducers to measure continuously the load applied to the bearing.

Pot bearing for ILM bridges :

Boulonnais Viaducts France - 2002. In addition to post-tensioning works VSL supplied and installed special steel pot bearings with a 700 to 3.500t capacity
  • Bearings with low friction surface for the sliding of structures using the Incremental Launching Method.
  • Bearings are temporary and permanent with significant cost saving.

Main components

Structural bearings are made to connect different parts of a structure such as bridge decks to piers and abutments. The most widely used structural bearings are plain or reinforced elastomeric bearings, and Pot bearings. They allow to transmit forces while absorbing deformations and rotations of the structure.

The strength of reinforced elastomeric bearings is limited by the shear properties of the elastomeric block, specially when the three stresses: compression, shear and bending occur at the same time. Pot bearings maximise the shear strength of the bearing’s elastomer by encasing it in a steel cylinder. Pot bearing permit higher working loads in the elastomer, which, in turn, allows the bearing’s dimensions to be reduced. Spherical bearings allows for large rotations on the structure and their opposition to rotation is much more lower due to their spherical rotula with PTFE.

Stainless steel top plate: transfers the vertical and horizontal load from the superstructure to the remaining parts of the bearing.

P.T.F.E. (for free and guided bearings only): transfers the vertical load from the top plate to the piston and provides a low-friction surface against the sliding surface of the upper plate during movement.

Guide (for guided bearings only) and piston: transfers the horizontal load from the recess of the top plate to the pot and the vertical load to the elastomer. A recess on the surface of the piston confines the PTFE. An external sealing rin: prevents moisture and debris from entering the gap between the piston and the pot

Internal sealing ring: prevents the extrusion of the elastomer

Elastomer pad: transfers the vertical load from the piston to the pot and allows the bearing to rotate.

Pot (steel ring and base plate): confines the elastomer and eventually transfers vertical and horizontal loads to the substructure and bolts.

Bolts and sockets: resist horizontal loads.

Sliding surfaces:

The type PL (free sliding bearings) is obtained by dividing the upper plate into two independent elements : rectangular sliding plate and circular piston. The sliding ability is achieved by combining the following three materials into the sliding system :

  • polished stainless steel (mirror finishing) welded to the bottom side of the rectangular sliding plate.
  • circular dimpled PTFE disc confined in a recess of the piston. A minimum protrusion is given to grant full contact with stainless steel at any time. PTFE has very good behaviour against fatigue and impact and ageing resistance.
  • special lubricant grease: silicone base, this grease fills the dimples in the PTFE disc ensuring a permanent very low friction system coefficient and preventing abrasion of PTFE.
  • The combination of these three materials gives a regular range of friction coefficient between 1% and 3%.

Accessories - To meet the most stringent requirements

Anti dust skirt

This device is installed to protect the sliding surfaces of the bearing from dust which could affect the friction coefficient. This is recommended for both PL and PU bearing types. Neoprene skirts are riveted to bearing’s top plate.

Bearing with electrical isolation

Bearings with electrical isolation to avoid the pass of the electricity through the bearing. Required on some countries for Railway Bridges

Movement indicators

This apparatus is designed to measure the horizontal movements of the bearing and indicate pre-setting.

Guiding systems :

The type PU (guided sliding) is obtained by assembling a guide bar, either welded or bolted, on top of the piston. The guide bar slides along a longitudinal recess in the sliding plate, thus avoiding transverse movement. Contact between guide bar and sliding plate consists of special composite material (DU-metal) fixed to the guide bar and stainless steel backed to the sliding plate, ensuring a minimum friction coefficient

Corrosion protection :

Zinc thickness check

All external steel parts of the bearings are protected against corrosion to guarantee their durability. Metallic parts of pot bearings are sandblasted according with SIS-05 5900 ( Sa 2 1/2), and over this prepared surface the protective coats are applied. In Europe the protective coats consists on a metallization with zinc and a finishing coat with Epoxy paint. This combination has been tested and certified according to Euronorm EN 1337-9 and so it is able to assure long time protection on a sea environment provided that the handling, storage and installation are done properly and without damages to the protective system. All surfaces which come into contact with concrete should not be painted. Special corrosion protection can be applied under request giving electrical isolation to the bearings which sometimes is required for certain structures as railways, etc.

Testing in laboratory – the quality and conformity behaviour of VSL’s pot bearings are regularly checked at accredited test laboratories by means of vertrical load tests, combined vertical and horizontal load tests and friction tests.
