Expert advice for repair works in Bangkok |
 |
VSL has worked on the reconstruction of Bangkok’s Central World Shopping Centre and Big C Ratchadamri mall, damaged during civil unrest in 2010. VSL provided post-tensioning advice during inspections of the structures, cutting and re-anchoring of unbonded PT to allow safe demolition of slabs damaged beyond repair. In addition, sections of damaged floor slabs were rebuilt using the VSL Bonded Slab PT system. |

PT cables for thin eggshell |
 | The Swiss “Il Diamante de Chiasso” shopping mall features the technically impressive feat of a huge but extremely thin concrete shell. Its walls are just 100mm to 120mm thick. VSL’s post-tensioned cables are installed at the shell’s median level, to withstand the hoop forces generated by the above structure working as a vault. | |

Maison de l’Ecriture in Switzerland |
 | Six writers’ ‘cabins’ will be attached to the canopy of Switzerland’s Maison de l’Ecriture in Montricher, whose design resembles a honeycomb with 270 cells. In addition to the post-tensioning, VSL provided seven sliding neoprene bearings, which were required for part of the canopy. Post-tensioning has allowed two 12m-high buildings to be anchored to the ground in a column-free zone. | |

PT for Qatari International Islamic Bank |
 | VSL continues its history of challenging projects in Qatar with a contract for the new International Islamic Bank (IIB) headquarters and commercial tower. Haman Bin Khalid Contracting awarded VSL the contract for the design, supply and supervision of post-tensioning for 30,000m² of post-tensioned slabs. | |
 | The Sun Moon Lake tourist centre won the Taiwan Public Construction Golden Award – Excellent Quality in 2010. The designer chose post-tensioning to create long-span arch beams and slabs. VSL provided consultancy at the design stage and also supplied and installed the post-tensioning. | |

 | The innovative VAO project at Valle Oriente in San Pedro, Mexico, includes office, residential and commercial spaces together with a five-star hotel. VSL has been involved with the second and third of five phases of the scheme designed by V&FO Arquitectos for developer Internacional de Inversiones. | |

Longest VSLAB application to date |
 | The Lake Hefner Clearwell project in the US involved the longest application to date of VSL’s bonded VSLAB system. The 152.4m-long slab is part of a 6.7m-high post-tensioned 45.6 million litre tank. Among the challenges: designing walls, columns and roof to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction. | |

Unusual design for Taipei’s Ocean Grand |
 | Ocean Grand in Taipei is a 15-storey residential building featuring wave-shaped balconies, which have repeating shapes on alternate floors. VSL provided the post-tensioning design, materials and installation for the balcony slabs. The project uses the VSL S-5 slab bonded post-tensioned system anchorage for a total slab area of 13,000m². | |

Perfect finish for Binningup concrete water tank |
 | VSL Australia has used innovative edge forms to achieve a perfect slab finish on a contract to design and build a 16,000 m3 concrete water tank on the Binningup Desalination Plant. The 2,800m2 post-tensioned slab was formed using innovative hybrid steel and ply edge forms, which resulted in a crack-free surface finish. | |

Careful planning for a LNG tank |
 | Shanghai Power Engineering & Construction awarded VSL the PT work on the 50,000m³ Ningxia LNG tank project. A two-month winter shutdown on the worksite required VSL to plan the works carefully to accommodate temperature constraints and meet time limitation between strand installation and grouting phases. | |

476 segments for Medium Term Link in Malaysia |
 | VSL worked in a joint venture to cast and erect 476 precast box girder segments for the Medium Term Link’s superstructure. The twin carriageways were erected by the free cantilever method using an overhead launching gantry. Logistics were challenging as the bridge passes over water pipelines and existing road and rail traffic. | |
 | VSL has worked with Citra Metro Manila Tollways Corporation and main contractor DM Consunji Inc. on South Metro Manila Skyway Stage 2 project, a six-lane, 7km expressway that will double road capacity. Airport interchange in Warsaw |
 | VSL Poland supplied and installed the post-tensioning systems for the three viaducts of Warsaw’s Okecie Interchange near the Chopin Airport. The viaduct beams are stressed by cables of type 19L15 and 22L15. | |
 | The main girders of the extradosed Aare River Bridge in Switzerland are suspended on prestressed "concrete sails” and anchored so that the tunnel becomes a load-bearing component of the bridge. Challenges for VSL include the arrangement of tendons, the requirement for a deviation tube at the top of the sails and fixing the sail tendons at the tunnel walls. | |

Post-tensioning for substantial savings |
 | Use of VSL’s post-tensioned solution instead of traditional reinforcement on Meridiano Tower in Mexico achieved a 10% cost saving for the slabs and a 20% saving for the foundations. The 27,600m² of post-tensioned slabs required 70t of 0.5” (12.7mm) strand. VSL’s scope in the foundation construction involved the provision of 26t of strand. | |

Bondtech® system for tailored design |
 | VSL’s involvement in Barcelona’s new Design Hub has covered post-tensioning and design assistance. VSL’s Bondtech® system was chosen for the slabs of the central core. VSL’s solution for the unusual slab layout of block 3 consists of a 750mm flat concrete waffle slab, providing an extremely high stiffness to self-weight ratio. | |
 | A new 120m-high silo with an internal multi-cell configuration has been reinforced using unbonded NSM (Near Surface Mounted) post-tensioning to increase the shear response of the internal walls by 70%. An existing 47m-high silo was patch-repaired and provided with external post-tensioning and waterproof mortar protection. | |

R1 expressway in the Czech Republic |
 | Various VSL internal and external PT systems are used on Bridge 205, a 960m-long viaduct on the R1 expressway in the Czech Republic. The top slab is transversally post-tensioned using the VSL S 6-4 bonded slab system while the VSL thread bar system is implemented to fix the struts prior deck casting. | |
 | For the LAES-2 nuclear power plant in Russia, VSL is supplying NC 6-55 unbonded post-tensioning, which is a greased and sheathed system that complies with the latest nuclear requirements. The project includes 50 vertical tendons and 76 horizontal hoop tendons for each block, requiring a total of about 1,400t of strand. | |
